Do you want to know how to write a travel journal? Or curious as to what to include in a travel journal ? Well you have come to the right place!

We will discuss the main tips on how to write a travel journal, the key points to consider and what to include in a travel journal.

5 tips on how to write a travel journal and the benefits of writing a travel journal

  1. First tip on how to write a travel journal and what to include in a travel journal - 'You can make it your own' - why not be creative:? What I love to do is to collect receipts from attractions, stamps, business cards or brochures from places I’ve visited and stick them in, even at the end of the year I stuck my student ID into the back of the journal, it’s a great way to make visual memories whilst making written memories, that is why, when i get asked 'What to include in a travel journal?' i reply with 'everything and anything' - quiet literally.

  2. Second tip on how to write a travel journal and what to include in a travel journal - Write about attributes of people who inspire you - you will most definitely meet some inspiring people! I know I certainly did! Writing down how you met them on the first day may be different to the day you say your goodbyes, so it not only tracks your progress in relationship building , but allows you to write down attributes that you see in others that you wish you found or developed in yourself. For example, what I would include in my travel journal is as follow - I met a friend whilst in Tokyo, who was a monk-turned-business owner. He was not only into personal development but also had the drive and determination that I wished to find in myself. People like that, or other people you may randomly meet are second to none, writing attributes will not only inspire you but will drive you to become the best version of yourself.

  3. Third tip on how to write a travel journal and what to include in a travel journal - write down your thoughts and experiences on a daily basis - As writing down thoughts is a great way for you to sharpen your memory of your time abroad. Let’s say for example, the year is 2050, and someone asked you what you did in the summer whilst on your exchange year, You could go right to the specific day or even month! Which is always exciting as instantly you’ll be able to remember the day as if it was yesterday! Which is not only fascinating but will also fill you with happiness and joy, as you can almost re live the day in your mind.

  4. Fourth tip on how to write a travel journal and what to include in a travel journal - Write down things you have learnt from your surroundings - this is by the far the most important. As writing down your days as you are experiencing them not only allows you to cite specific locations eg ‘we went to X restaurant on Y street’ but also you can write how the location or event made you feel. Thus learning about what makes you happy and what may make you not so happy, to allow you to learn and understand yourself on a more deeper level.

  5. Fifth tip on how to write a travel journal and what to include in a travel journal - Write down reflections - - this point links with the point above, as reflecting is a form of learning. However, the different from point 4, is that the reflection can happen any time after you have written the entry. Eg in 10 years time, or even a years time, understanding why at the moment of writing you felt such experiences and what has changed since.
