What Scholarships are available for International Students? 

1. University-specific UK scholarships for international students

  • British Chevening Scholarships for International Students

British Chevening Scholarships are commonwealth scholarship, and are funded by the FCO (Foreign and Commonwealth Office). It is a significant scholarship just for the number of awards to offer. Chevening Scholarships are granted to more than 1500 students in from 140 countries.

College / University: Any University in the UK

Courses Eligible: Full time Taught Master’s Degree in any subject

Scholarships Include: Course Tuition Fees, Monthly living expenses, Economy Class return airfare to UK, additional grants and allowances.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Must be a citizen of Chevening Country, the list of 162 countries around the world.

  • Return to home country for minimum 2 years after the scholarship has ended.

  • Two years of work experience.

  • An Acceptance letter from the Universities in UK.

  • English Language Proficiency Proof.

Scholarship Application Deadline: 6 November, every year.

  •  Gates Cambridge Scholarships for International Students

Gates is another one from the most prestigious Scholarships in UK. It is awarded to academically strong students who are promising, and are citizens from the country outside of UK.

College / University: University of Cambridge, UK

Courses Eligible: PhD, MLitt or MSc, or any one-year postgraduate course

Scholarships Include: Full cost of studying at Cambridge, travel costs, maintenance allowances, family allowance, fieldwork etc.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Citizen of a country outside of United Kingdom

  • Applying for PhD, MLitt, MSc or any full time one-year postgraduate program

Scholarship Application Deadline: 10 October for USA students and 05 December for others, annually.

  • Clarendon Fund Scholarships at University of Oxford

Not as big as Chevening Scholarships, but Clarendon is another prestigious Scholarship when it comes to the number of awards. Every year, more than around 140 scholarships are granted to the students from all around the world, who have a strong academic background and show potential.

College / University: University of Oxford, UK

Courses Eligible: Any full time Graduate and Master’s Programs excluding PG Diploma and Certificate Courses.

Scholarships Include: All the tuition and college fees, £14,777 annually for living costs for the duration of the course.

Eligibility Criteria: Outstanding Academic Background and Potential as a graduate student.

Scholarship Application Deadline: 25 January, annually.

  •  Warwick Chancellor’s International Scholarships

Warwick Chancellor’s is allocated via a postgraduate research competition. It is available to all international students accepted for any discipline for PhD.

College / University: University of Warwick, UK

Courses Eligible: PhD in any discipline at the University of Warwick

Scholarships Include: Full payment of Tuition fees up to £22,860 and A maintenance stipend of £15,044 For 3.5 years

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Must be accepted in a PhD discipline offered at University of Warwick.

  • Students already in first year of PhD at Warwick can also apply.

  • No specific country requirements, student must be from outside of UK.

Scholarship Application Deadline: 18 January, annually.

  •  Westminster International Scholarships

Available to the students who are from developing countries, anyone can apply for Westminster International Scholarships, given that they are accepted for a full time Master’s program at Westminster.

College / University: University of Westminster, UK

Courses Eligible: Full time Master’s Program at Westminster University, except MBA.

Scholarships Include: Tuition Fees, Accommodation, Living allowances and flight fare of to and from London.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Must be from the developing country listed in the eligibility criteria on the scholarship website

  • Holds an offer to study a full time master’s program at University of Westminster.

Scholarship Application Deadline: The Scholarship Application Deadline for Westminster International Scholarships is 13 October, annually.

Various UK scholarship programs for graduate international students enrolling at Scotland’s University of Edinburgh. The university also offers scholarships for students from Central and South America.

Each scholarship will cover the difference between the tuition fee for a UK/EU postgraduate student and that chargeable to an overseas postgraduate student. The awards do not cover maintenance expenses.

Subject to satisfactory progress, the awards are tenable for up to three years.​

Undergraduate scholarships are available to study at Imperial College London, including the President's Undergraduate Scholarships. The university also offers postgraduate scholarships.

  • There are up to 112 President's Undergraduate Scholarships available for students starting their studies in 2020-21.

  • Each President's scholar will receive £1,000 for each undergraduate year of study (for a maximum of four years).

The university’s international office awards scholarships for all study levels, including undergraduate scholarships for Indian students.

You can apply for an International Scholarship if you meet all of the following criteria:

  • you are an international student (classified as 'overseas fee status')

  • you have an offer to study an Undergraduate or Postgraduate degree course (September intake only)

  • you are not currently enrolled on a Kingston University course

  • King’s College London Collaborative Scholarship

  • The university offers a variety of funding opportunities and scholarships for a various areas of study. Link the link to find out more, to become apart of King’s College London, which is highly regarded in the fields of law, humanities, sciences and other social sciences.

2. Government-funded UK Scholarships for International Student

Foreign and Commonwealth Office and partner organisations. The scholarships provide full or part funding for full-time graduate programs in any subject.

  • Commonwealth Scholarships for Developing Commonwealth Countries – Scholarships for international students from developing countries in the Commonwealth, for studies at master’s and PhD level. The full list of eligible countries is available here.

  • Commonwealth Shared Scholarship Scheme at UK Universities – UK scholarships for international students undertaking taught master’s programs in the UK. Programs studied must be demonstrably relevant to the development of technology, economy or society within the student’s country of origin.

  • Marshall Scholarships – Postgraduate scholarships for US students showing academic merit, leadership potential and ambassadorial potential to study in the UK. Excludes MBAs and certain courses.

     3. Non-governmental UK Scholarships for International Students

  • Euraxess UK – Euraxess is an initiative of the European Commission, providing support for researchers in Europe. The UK branch of the scheme is run by the British Council, offering various graduate research scholarships for international students from around the world.

  • CastleSmart Scholarship - Estate agent CastleSmart offers £6,000 annually for an undergraduate student in the UK (open to all nationalities). Applicants must create a compelling YouTube video outlining their study and career plans.

  • Surfshark Privacy and Security Scholarship - A $2,000 prize is available to a student currently enrolled in the UK or another study destination as a high school, undergraduate or graduate student. You will need to submit an essay to apply and the scholarship is open to all nationalities. 

  • The Royal Society Grants – Various grants and fellowships are available for talented researchers in the UK and beyond.

Tips for applying for International Scholarships for UK Universities

  • To receive a great scholarship, you need to have an equally great scholarship application essay

  • In most cases, a generic application will not work for you. In the same way as you would if you apply for a job, you will need to tailor your letter or application to meet the specific eligibility criteria stated and clearly show how you meet those criteria. Try not to give a sob story, but show how you are determined to overcome any personal difficulties and having the additional money will help you achieve your goals.

  • Lastly, I have one final piece of advice for international students applying for international scholarships it would be ‘Just go for it, anything is possible!"
